Lattanzio KIBS presents the results of “Così lontani, così vicini,” the study on the attitudes of adolescents and young people toward their peers with a migration background in Italy

How italian youth experience diversity

On the occasion of International Migrant Day, UNICEF organizes the presentation event for the report “Così lontani, così vicini,” a survey conducted and written by Lattanzio KIBS and Ipsos in collaboration with UNICEF's research team. The study examines the attitudes of 1,000 Italian adolescents and young people aged 15 to 24 toward migration, discrimination, and racism.

Specifically, the survey explores their perceptions of peers with a migration background: the results show that 93% of the young people interviewed have either experienced or witnessed discriminatory acts, 29% feel excluded from the community, while 85% consider intercultural exchange an opportunity for enrichment.

Challenges and recommendations for the future

Despite openness to diversity, prejudices and misconceptions persist: 87% overestimate the number of migrants in Italy, highlighting the need to improve the quality of media information. The report emphasizes the importance of targeted policies to combat racism, promote intergenerational dialogue, and support young people’s active engagement in social activities.

As Nicola Dell’Arciprete, UNICEF Coordinator for Europe and Central Asia, highlights: “It is essential to invest in Generation Z’s ability to transform their inclusive vision into concrete actions for a fair and cohesive society.”
