Working alongside CBRNs for nuclear risk containment

The European Union (EU) Centers of Excellence for the Mitigation of Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) Risks is a global initiative funded and implemented by the European Union as part of its goal to promote peace, stability and conflict prevention. The objective of the initiative is to mitigate risks and strengthen security governance in confronting any risk in EU partner countries by following a voluntary, demand-driven approach.

In detail

EU support is provided to implement a wide range of CBRN risk mitigation activities, including needs and risk assessments, national and regional action plans, capacity-building activities, legal framework reviews, field exercises (including cross-border), regional interchange of best practices and lessons learned.

Currently 62 Partner Countries have joined the initiative organized into 8 regions each of which has its own Regional Secretariat. The purpose of the current project managed by Lattanzio is to provide Technical Assistance to the Rabat Regional Secretariat and Partner Countries that are part of the African Atlantic Façade. The project started in November 2018 and ends on December 20, 2022.

As of 2023, Lattanzio, as a member of a consortium, will manage a three-year contract for Technical Assistance to all 8 Regional Secretariats by providing support in addition to the Rabat Regional Secretariat also to the one in Algiers and the 8 countries that are part of the North Africa and Sahel region. These are expected to be joined in the coming months by Nigeria.

Project Pluses

The project has given and will give the team of experts the opportunity to contribute indirectly to the achievement of the EU goals on conflict prevention and thus to confront the challenges still existing on the topic in the African territory.
